McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales
edited by Michael Chabon, 476 pgs, paperback
Overall Grade: C
Ala collections of fantastic stories from the '30s and '40s, this is an anthology of oddball fantasy/mystery/scifi stories from a motley crew of famous authors.
Labels: genre: fiction, media: book
Proven Guilty
by Jim Butcher, 479 pgs, paperback
Overall Grade: B+
Series: The Dresden Files
Definitely another good installment of the Dresden Files, set between 'Dead Beat' and 'White Night'.

Flags of Our Fathers
by James Bradley, 353 pgs, hardcover
Overall Grade: B
Gives a really nice overview of the WWII conflict on Iwo Jima. By following the lives of the Marines and sailors in the famous flag-raising picture (one of whom was the author's father), Bradley presents good incite into a slice of America before/during/after the war.

So much potential and then it fumbles it! They really didn't need the sci-fi aspect. And don't even get me started on the ending. Still I was very happy to see Marion back - she was always the best of the ladies in my opinion.

Star Trek: Tales from the Captain's Table
edited by Keith R.A. DeCandido, 328pgs, paperback
Overall Grade: B
Again, I acquired this one because it has a 'Star Trek: New Frontier' story in it, namely by Captain Shelby. Which was actually a useful story because I had wondered how Soleta got outted. Anyway, more short stories based on the Captain's Table premise.

Star Trek: Mirror Universe: Obsidian Alliances
stories by Keith R.A. DeCandido, Peter David & Sarah Shaw, 435pgs, paperback
Overall Grade: B
Series: Star Trek New Frontier
Only got this because it has a mirror 'Star Trek: New Frontier' story in it. Which was very unsatisfying btw. I suppose the stories are good in and of themselves. I've only seen a few of the mirror universe episodes and those were from 'Enterprise'.

Official one of the best movies I've seen this summer. Obviously helps if you've seen some of the old tv series it's a remake of.

The Emerald Cavern
Overall Grade: F
Really, I can't see how self-respecting fantasy readers could stomach this garbage! I'm sure they could write better. Oh, the agony... I couldn't even get through the first 100 pages. How did I ever manage to read the first one? So my obvious advice is to avoid this book!

Small Favor

Overall Grade: A-
Sequel to 'White Night'.
Sometimes the Dresden File books are spot-on, sometimes they feel a little off. This one was a little off, for me anyway. Oh, don't get me wrong, there's lots of the usual suspects (good and bad), as well as some new members and minions. But there's a lot of plot-building in this novel too. Laying the groundwork for more future Dresden stories we hope. So without revealing spoilers for this book, I'll say that it's about Marcone being abducted, the Queen of Winter calling in a favor, and Harry finding somebody to carry Fidelacchius. It's good.
