Yea, things happen in this installment of Weber's Safehold series! Cayleb and his new bride Sharleyan don't get to spend much time together in this book because Cayleb is off to fight Corisande. And with Merlin's "visions" and the Charisians' superior arms/tactics, I bet you can guess how that turns out. Also we get another assassination attempt - this time on the new Empress. And more time watching the inner Group of Four slowly splinter. Weber simultaneously plows the plot forward, and sets up for future novels in the series. Sequel to 'By Schism Rent Asunder'.

Sequel to 'Off Armageddon Reef'. About 500 pages of rising action. I can't think there was a single surprise in here. Some revelations that came sooner than I personally expected, but no major action. And yet I read the whole dang thing and I'll read the next one too. Darn you Weber! How do you do?

Off Armageddon Reef

Series: Safehold book 1

This book is epic. It is a beast and, presumably, the first book in a hefty saga. Does that mean it is any good? It's okay. The characters grew on me after awhile, though I never got used to the negative view on religion - I mean, come on, why not a fiction book where religion is a good, saving point to the plot?
Anyways, the story starts out with the utter annihilation of the human species except for a very clever little "ark" plan. Then it jumps forward some odd thousands of years to what is happening on humanity's little terraformed nest egg.
