Cold Days

by Jim Butcher, 515 pgs, hardcover
Series: Dresden Files book 14
Overall Grade: A

Harry is back from the "dead" and now in the service of faerie queen of Winter, Mab, as her Winter Knight. And one of her first orders for him? Kill Maeve, the Winter Lady. Is it a test for Harry or does she really want Maeve dead? As Harry digs deeper, he finds that seriously bad things are scheduled to go down on Halloween, and they have to do with the true purpose of the island Demonreach. Harry is going to start pulling some reluctant answers from faeries and other supernatural creatures in order to put a name to whom or what is pulling the strings behind all the building turmoil in the magical world. And while he'd like to go it solo since he considers himself compromised by having to serve Mab, Harry's friends aren't going to let that happen, and we see Molly, Murphy, Thomas, and others return to aid him once again.

Highlander

R, 116 minutes
Series: Highlander (movie #1)
IMDB
Overall Grade: A

There are Immortals scattered throughout the world and time. They can't die unless you cut off their heads. When only a few are left they'll be drawn together in the Gathering and fight to the last man standing.
Yup, that's basically the premise of the movie. I was a little appalled at the swordwork early in the movie, but it got better. I was also happy with Christopher Lambert's ambiguous accent during the course of the movie. That really sold it to me that he'd been alive and living in various countries for a long time. Plus, the soundtrack is by Queen.

Museum of Thieves

by Lian Tanner, 312 pgs, hardcover
Series: Keepers trilogy #1
Overall Grade: B-

Goldie Roth lives in the city of Jewel, which has fought so hard in the past to establish itself that it has eradicated all animals (dangerous or otherwise), in the process the people became so paranoid about their children's survival that they now keep their children tethered to them with chains until they reach the age of maturity, or "separation." Chafing under the system, Goldie runs away and finds refuge in the fantastical Museum of Dunt, a hole-in-the-wall place that's inexplicably bigger on the inside, where rooms and stairs move of their own accord, and artifacts and creatures remain from through out the history of the city.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey soundtrack

composed by Howard Shore, special edition - 2 discs, ~2.1 hrs
Series: prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy; first of the The Hobbit trilogy
Overall Grade: A-

Fewer memorable tracks than the LotR trilogy, but still Shore's beautiful music vividly invokes the scenery of Middle Earth. Going in I already knew that my favorite track would be 'Misty Mountains' sung by the cast playing the dwarves.
