Pan's Labyrinth soundtrack

composed by Javier Navarrete, 21 tracks, ~73 min
Listen to the whole thing online @ the official website
Official Grade: B+

B+ because I am enchanted with the lullaby theme found in tracks 1, 8, 20 & 21, but I didn't really find any other tracks too enchanting. Obviously you will recognize some of them if you've seen the movie, but nothing stood out too much besides the theme -ah, I love that theme, end up humming it all day.
Recommended to: people that can't get enough of the haunting lullaby from the movie

Dracula

by Bram Stoker, 400 pgs, hardcover
Overall Grade: A-

Surprisingly good. Ending is lackluster. Of course it sounds trite, but it is a classic for a good reason. Ignore the Victorian-era-stereotype of women and try to forget anything you know vampires -then read this. Pretty outstanding!
Plus if you're like me, you probably only have a vague notion of the actual story because movies have messed with it like crazy. It is quite different than I expected and quite good!
Recommended to: all people literary enough to not be annoyed by Victorian stereotypes.

The Book of Lost Tales 1

by J.R.R. Tolkien, 279 pgs, paperback
Series: The Histories of Middle Earth book 1; prequel to The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings trilogy
 Overall Grade: B

Basically, Christopher Tolkien published a bunch of his father's writing journals after his father's death -trying to put them in some semblance of order. This book contains the elder Tolkien's early versions of the early mythology of Middle-Earth, i.e. Valinor, the Valar, the First Age, the Simarils, the Kin-Slaying, etc. If you found the first half of the 'Silmarillion' unbearably dull then you should avoid this book at all costs.
Recommended to: people who are actually curious about the development of the mythology of Middle-Earth.

300

rated R, 117 min
Official Website
Overall Grade: C+

I supposed I have to admit that this movie was at least vaguely interesting for the time spent in the theater. I probably wouldn't have gone if my friends weren't going though. '300' is pretty much exactly like the trailers and ads bill it -a graphic novel made into a movie. It feels completely that way, right down to the gratuitously buff men and hyperstylized enemies. You wouldn't know it is based on a historical event if you didn't know it.
Anyway, I recommend this to: peoples interested in this guy's comic-style movies or history buffs that won't have a heart-attack with the free-wheeling adaptations of the story.
