Raising Steam

by Terry Pratchett, 365 pgs, hardcover
Series: Discworld
Overall Grade: A-

It's hard for me not to give an A to a Discworld book. Especially one which makes use of some of my favorite characters like Moist von Lipwig (our reluctant protagonist for a third time), Sam Vimes, and Lord Vetinari. There's definitely some great zingers of lines in this work and the usual Pratchett witticism. I only give it a minus because it covers SO much ground so quickly.
The plot follows Moist as he is tasked by the Patrician to coordinate the creation of the first railway/railcompany in the Discworld. Faced with the same land-use, patent-rights, etc. issues encountered at the genesis of the railroad in our world, there are also the quirks of Discworld dealing with the many species (Dwarfs, Trolls, Golems, Goblins, etc.) and their own politics with regards to the innovation.
