The awkward love triangle: Sally, Leo and Brendan. |
unrated (probably R though), 96 minutes

Overall Grade: B
Watched this because of a picture post that I encountered on tumblr, admittedly because it has Kevin McKidd and James Purefoy from HBO's Rome (Lucius Vorenus & Marc Antony respectively) in it. The whole thing is circa the late 1990s so be prepared for the fashion flashback (metrosexual fashion could not have started soon enough!)
Anyways, the main plot follows romantic exploits of the gay but timid Leo (McKidd) who has a deep fear of falling in love with a straight man. By day, he works at a carpentry shop where his friend and co-worker finally talks Leo into going along to the men's group he attends. Admitted nervous about being around straight men getting in touch with their feelings, Leo reluctantly agrees. Keith leads a hilariously new-age-y men's group that Leo continues to attend. Under the auspices of an honesty exercise, he admits to being attracted to Brendan (Purefoy), another of the group members. They attempt to awkwardly be cool with each other, but end up gravitating into a relationship. Except there's a third person involved- Sally, who is Leo's confidant and great friend from high school, is also Brendan's ex, sort of. They aren't too clear. So you see where this is going.
Interspersed into this is the side-story of Leo's flamboyantly gay flatmate Darren who drops everything at a phone call to have kinky sex in houses for which Darren's estate agent boyfriend Jeremy (Hugo Weaving) has keys. This also leads to some hilariously awkward scenes.
