Will in the World

by Stephen Greenblatt, 390 pgs, hardcover

Overall Grade: B+
Pretty good. This is a nonfiction work where the author follows Shakespeare through his life & the people, events & books that influenced him. Often it is speculation, but it makes sense & the ties to his plays are very interesting. Spend some quality time with the Bard this holiday season.

Antigone

by Sophocles, translated by Paul Woodruff, 68pgs, paperback
Amazon site
Overall Grade: B-
This is a very excellent play that you should definitely read if you haven't already. Based in the ancient Greek city of Thebes, it follows up on the curse of the Oedipal family, with his daughter Antigone flaunting the decrees given by the ruler of the city (her uncle Creon) to follow a higher, divine requirement to bury her brother. It raises a lot of good issues, especially if you need a shorter work to mow down in a discussion group. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was because the translation was mostly decent, but kind of urky in a few spots.
